Analyze Externally Hosted (Linked) Media

Analysis can be run on these medias without uploading and hosting on the portal, and the results exported.

If you have your own hosting, or would like to try out creating object detections on a third-party media, such as a video on YouTube. You can do that in portal via linking, or creating a referenced media.

Create Linked Media

From the Home page of the portal, on the top right there is a Upload files section, and below it a link to link your hosted media . Click the link to launch a popup with a form to import media via url. Import will create a reference in your media list that can then be chosen for analysis.

In the import dialog, you will have the option to Save + Add another (first button) or Save and Close to return to the media gallery.

Analyze Linked Media

The top use case for linking media is to utilize the resources and algorithm setup that portal has to offer on video or imagery that has a fixed location, to reduce duplication or to increase access to the data that would otherwise be unachievable. Users whose primary interest is in the Biological results that are offered through technology, but without the technology time, resources, etc. can then link the media and run analysis as usual. The media and results are associated to your projects in portal and can be used to further research.

Requirements

The media must be accessible from our algorithm resources to effectively review the media and create observations. Some restrictions that may cause errors with your media involve permissions. If you are using a video hosted on YouTube there are also age restrictions and authentication dependencies which might trip up the algorithm run. If you run into any issues you can contact the team for more help.

How to run analysis on linked media

To run analysis you can do this a few ways:

  1. Go to the Media detail Analysis tab by clicking the brain icon and "Not analyzed"

  2. Select the media card and choose the Analyze with AI

    1. From here you can choose from multiple models which will best support your use case.

Uploaded versus Linked Media

There are some differences when working with linked media.

From the media gallery, linked or referenced media will show in the gallery, however, there is no saved thumbnail. Linked YouTube videos will attempt to grab the thumbnail. Additionally, ingested media, added via upload and hosted on OVAI, specifically video content, goes through a process called transcoding in which it is prepped for compatibility with web-based, browser-dependent video playback. This feature is in development to work on playing compatible, linked files for viewing and editing analysis results.

Like media hosted within the Portal, you can analyze the media using the available models, but the results will be accessible only through export. Once analysis is complete, the current way to get results is to download the results via CSV, or using Python tools to download it into other formats for QA/QC of the algorithm results.
