Marking for Export

Assembling an export from the portal starts with marking the items you wish to export. Marked items are either a still image, or a specific frame location in a video.
In the portal, marking for export is a way to indicate items that might be part of a future export. You can mark for export manually, or by an automatic selection method. The selection options, or sampling, options recommended for FathomNet Database and FathomVerse are observation based, meaning selecting frames and/or images from your project that have been annotated. The default sampling method for this in videos where observations contain annotations over time, is to choose a single frame to represent the observation in an export.
Once marked, the frame/image can be reviewed in the Export Staging Area, and then added to a named export package. You can read more below on the locations within the portal where you can mark items for export. If you are interested in export types, you can go here to read information on starting and export.
Manual Selection
When annotating media in the Image or Video Media Player view you will be able to mark the view you are looking at (Video frame, or Image) when there is at least one observation present.
To mark the view for export, there is a button under the image/frame. This makes that particular view available in the Export Staging Area. You will then need to review the items in the Staging Area and can start the export from there as well. Here is more information on starting and export.
Sampling Observations across Media(s)
Another way to mark for export, is by using the sampling methods provided from the media player for videos, and can be used in the Video and Image view from your dashboard/folder view. A sampled selection helps speed up the process of putting images into your export. You will still need to review the frames in the Staging Area. Here is more information on starting and export.
In the Video Media Player is a button on the top right then will suggest sampling methods for the observations in the video. The sampling selection process aims to not duplicate frames already marked for another observation, and will let you know the count of frames resulting or skipped in the sampling dialog.
From the Video & Images tab for a project folder, you can also apply this automation, but in this view it will happen in bulk across the files you selected. Again, this automated selection chooses one frame per observation for you. The selection process aims to not duplicate frames already marked for another observation. This selection might speed up the process of creating a starting set for your export. You will then need to review the frames in the Staging Area.
Bulk automatic selection may take a minute or two given the amount of information the automation is considering, but you should see a progress indication, and a completion message when it is ready to view in the Staging Area.
Advanced
In the future more advanced sampling will become available for edge cases were more than 1 frame per localization is required, or for frames without observations to be sampled to support machine learning. These advanced use cases are not recommended for data exported with the end goal of submissions to the FathomNet Database or FathomVerse.
